An Ancient Scale Rediscovered
In the eleventh century, the Benedictine monk Guido d'Arezzo was searching for a way to teach plainchant to his choir. He chose a hymn dedicated to John the Baptist — Ut queant laxis — because each of its six phrases began on a successively higher note of the musical scale. He named the six notes after the first syllable of each phrase: Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La. These became the foundation of the solfège system still used in music education today. Ut was later renamed Do.
The frequencies themselves were explored in a different context. In the 1990s, Dr Joseph Puleo, working with biblical numerology researcher Dr Leonard Horowitz, identified a set of six tones embedded in the Book of Numbers in the Old Testament. The method was Pythagorean reduction — a numerological technique of repeatedly summing the digits of a number until reaching a single digit. Applied to specific verse and chapter numbers, Puleo found recurring single-digit patterns he associated with a set of Hertz values: 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852.
Horowitz and Puleo published their findings in Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse (1999), arguing that these frequencies had been deliberately encoded in ancient scripture and that they carried specific healing properties. Three additional tones — 174 Hz, 285 Hz, and 963 Hz — were identified later by other researchers as natural extensions of the original six, completing a symmetrical set of nine.
What the solfeggio frequencies do share with all music is a mathematical foundation. They are real acoustic frequencies. They interact with the auditory system and through it with the nervous system. The research on their specific claimed properties is limited and often preliminary — but the research on sound, rhythm and resonance affecting physiological states is substantial and growing.
The Nine Frequencies
Each Tone, Its Character and Its Chakra
The nine solfeggio frequencies span roughly five and a half octaves, from a deep low 174 Hz to the high shimmer of 963 Hz. Each is associated with a specific intention, a chakra energy centre, and a traditional name. Within the For Humanity toolkit, each frequency also owns a distinct colour range and a sacred geometry pattern derived from its natural wave mode.
The Chakra System
Energy Centres Through Three Traditions
The word chakra comes from Sanskrit, meaning wheel or circle. The chakra system describes a series of energy centres arranged along the central axis of the body, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. It is most fully developed in the Hindu tantric tradition, where it appears in texts such as the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana (c. 1577 CE), though precursor systems appear in earlier Vedic and yogic literature going back several millennia.
A parallel understanding exists in the Chinese meridian system — the concept of Qi flowing through channels in the body — and in the Kabbalistic tradition's Tree of Life, whose Sefirot map a strikingly similar hierarchy of consciousness from the material to the divine. The convergence of independent traditions around similar concepts is one of the more interesting recurring patterns in human thought about the body and consciousness.

In the traditional seven-chakra model, the two lowest frequencies — 174 Hz and 285 Hz — are assigned to extra-physical centres (Earth and Earth Star) that some traditions place below the body's physical boundary. These were not part of the original classical system but emerged through later esoteric teaching. The toolkit includes them as the two deepest, most grounding tones in the set.
The association between specific frequencies and specific chakras is not ancient — the pairing of Hertz values to Sanskrit energy centres is a modern synthesis, developed largely in the late twentieth century as Western sound therapy and Eastern energy traditions began to cross-pollinate. It is best understood as a framework for intention and attention rather than a literal description of physical anatomy.
Mathematics
The Numbers Behind the Tones
The solfeggio frequencies carry a consistent mathematical fingerprint. Across the set, each frequency differs from its neighbours by intervals that relate to simple integer ratios — the same ratios that underpin harmonic music theory and the overtone series.
396 − 285 = 111
417 − 396 = 21
528 − 417 = 111
639 − 528 = 111
741 − 639 = 102 ≈ 111 − 9
852 − 741 = 111
963 − 852 = 111
The interval of 111 Hz appears seven times across the nine-frequency set. The exceptions — the 21 Hz gap between 396 and 417, and the 102 Hz gap between 639 and 741 — are also interesting: 21 is a Fibonacci number, and 102 = 111 − 9, where 9 is the Pythagorean reduced value of all nine frequencies.
The Fibonacci Bridge used in the cymatics visualisation takes this mathematical relationship further. Each solfeggio frequency is multiplied by a Fibonacci number (5, 8 or 13) to reach a "visual frequency" in the 2,200–4,800 Hz range where physical Chladni plates produce their most complex and recognisable geometric patterns. The radial ring spacing in the resulting visual is then set using the golden ratio φ ≈ 1.618 — so each successive ring outward is φ times the radius of the previous one.

These are Fibonacci numbers: 13, 21, 34, 55.
The convergence at 963 Hz is not manufactured — it falls out of the arithmetic naturally. The Crown chakra frequency, multiplied by a Fibonacci number, produces radial wave modes that are themselves consecutive members of the Fibonacci sequence. It is the kind of mathematical coincidence that is difficult to dismiss as merely accidental and impossible to claim as proof of anything definitive.
Foundation Tuning
432 Hz — A Different Concert Pitch
Modern Western music is standardised to A = 440 Hz — a convention adopted by the International Organisation for Standardisation in 1953. Before that standardisation, concert pitch varied widely across time and geography. Historical instruments have been found tuned to everything from A = 415 Hz (baroque standard) to A = 466 Hz (some nineteenth-century orchestras). The idea of a single correct tuning is relatively recent.
The argument for A = 432 Hz rests on several convergences. At 432, middle C is 256 Hz — a power of two (2⁸), which means the entire chromatic scale maps to integer values or simple ratios rather than the irrational numbers produced by 440 Hz tuning. The frequency 432 also relates to a number of constants in ancient measurement systems — the diameter of the Sun is approximately 864,000 miles (2 × 432,000), and Plato's description of the World Soul uses numbers that reduce to 432 through Pythagorean analysis.
The subjective reports from listeners who switch from 440 to 432 consistently describe the lower tuning as warmer, more settled, and less fatiguing over long listening periods. These reports are consistent and cross-cultural but have not been formally studied in controlled conditions. In the For Humanity toolkit, all nine solfeggio frequencies are tuned relative to a 432 Hz foundation — so the mathematics and the warmth of that tuning underlie everything you hear.
Binaural Beats
Two Tones, One Internal Pulse
In 1839, the Prussian physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove discovered that presenting two slightly different pure tones — one to each ear — causes the brain to perceive a third tone at the difference frequency. This third tone is not acoustic. It does not exist in the air. It is generated entirely within the auditory processing of the brain. Dove called it a binaural beat.
If your left ear hears 528 Hz and your right ear hears 536 Hz, your brain perceives a pulsation at 8 Hz — the difference between the two. 8 Hz falls in the alpha brainwave range, associated with relaxed but alert attention. The hypothesis — supported by electroencephalography studies — is that sustained exposure to a binaural beat at a specific frequency gently entrains the brain toward generating more electrical activity at that frequency.

Isochronic tones are a variation that works over speakers rather than requiring headphones. Instead of two tones presented separately to each ear, a single tone is switched on and off at the target frequency, creating a rhythmic pulse that the auditory system and brain can follow. The toolkit offers both modes, and a Blend that combines them at lower individual volumes.
Science & Research
What the Evidence Actually Shows
Sound affects the body and mind — this much is not in question. Music therapy is an established clinical discipline with a substantial evidence base. Rhythm synchronises physiological oscillators. Specific frequencies affect mood through the auditory pathway and through mechanical resonance in body tissues. The question for the solfeggio frequencies specifically is more nuanced.
The strongest evidence in this space comes from research that is adjacent rather than direct. HeartMath Institute has conducted extensive research on heart rate variability (HRV) coherence — the degree to which the heart rhythm oscillates in a smooth, regular sine wave. Their findings show that coherent breathing at 0.1 Hz (five seconds in, five seconds out) reliably improves HRV coherence, reduces cortisol, and improves cognitive performance. This is the scientific foundation for the coherent breathing pattern used throughout the toolkit.
Research on binaural beats for anxiety reduction has produced mixed but generally positive results in several randomised trials. A 2019 meta-analysis published in Psychological Research found significant effects on anxiety, mood, and cognitive performance across 22 studies, though the authors noted methodological variability and called for more rigorous replication. The field is active and the quality of studies is improving.
On the specific solfeggio frequencies: a small study (Bartel et al., 2017) found that 528 Hz reduced stress hormones in cell cultures — but cell culture results do not reliably translate to whole-organism effects. Claims that 528 Hz repairs DNA are widely circulated but not supported by peer-reviewed evidence in living organisms. The honest position is that these frequencies are promising areas of inquiry, not proven therapies.
What is clear is this: paying sustained attention to sound, breath, and intention — which is what these tools invite — is a form of mindfulness practice. The evidence base for mindfulness and its effects on stress, inflammation, immune function, and psychological wellbeing is now extensive and robust. Whatever mechanism the solfeggio frequencies act through, they are being used as vehicles for attention and intention. That alone is worth something.
